Since the /etc/X11/xorg.conf configuration file was split into separate files under /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and eventually removed completely I was wondering how I could change the colour depth of the X Window System server.

Today when working with x2go, I eventually bit the bullet and figured it out.

.

Put the following configuration segment into /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/52-screen.conf.

For 16-bit colour depth use:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen Section"
        Device "<default device>"
        Monitor "<default monitor>"
        DefaultDepth 16
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 16
                Viewport 0 0
        EndSubSection
EndSection

For 24-bit colour depth use:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen Section"
        Device "<default device>"
        Monitor "<default monitor>"
        DefaultDepth 24
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 24
                Viewport 0 0
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Then restart your display manager.

# restart lightdm

or

# systemctl restart sddm
